New Five owner - hope for Glads?

Postby Chimera » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:30 am

So, Five - who expressed an interest in Gladiators when Sky cancelled it - have a new owner in Richard Desmond.

He seems very 'up' on the entertainment industry - owning OK magazine for starters - and the whole situation had me thinking about Gladdies.

There is of course nothing mentioned - don't get your hopes up - but I wonder about his plans and if he could at least be 'alerted' to the show...

That would be a dream situation - I really miss Glads!

That would be very good - it was taken off Sky way before its time. And hey, if it was brought back on Five, I'd be old enough to go on it :)

Five definitely have the money and the impetus at the moment to go for this. Richard Desmond has expressed a wish to take channel five back to when it was most popular - this was when it was packing hit game shows like Fort Boyard, Desert Forges and The Mole along with quiz formats like one to win and 100%. Five then secured it's place as game show central before 0898gate came along and swapped content for call and win.

Interestingly though Sky now not only own the rights to their original series - which is getting another prime time run on sky 3 so can't be doing that badly but they also own any rights that Challenge TV and Virgin 1 still held for the original series - along with any deal to continue to procure those rights cheaply. I wouldn't be surprised to see Challenge or the newly named Channel 1 showing double bills of classic and new gladiators within the next 24 months.

I don't half go on when I'm doing media analysis don't I.
